Abstract

This dissertation examines the Western concepts of ‘Enlightenment’ and ‘Freedom,’ exploring how these ideas entered the Indian Subcontinent and how they eventually permeated present-day Pakistan. What impact did these ideas have on Pakistani society and the state? What kinds of challenges has the state of Pakistan faced as a result of these effects, and how can these challenges be addressed or overcome. This has become an extensive ideological debate, and its effects on Pakistani politics are quite severe. For this reason, religious issues frequently turn into law-and-order problems in Pakistan. The dissertation includes the views and ideas of well-known Pakistani figures who hold different ideologies, including both secular and religious perspectives. The research shows that this is a significant issue, and in order to resolve it, the state will need to give preference to a unified Islamic ideology at the national level.
